Sealy Posturepedic, where Sleep meets Science
Our story began in 1940’s America…
In the 1940’s mattresses were typically soft. “Support” and “firmness” when describing mattresses were virtually unheard of – causing many people to suffer from back ache.
In the 1950s, Sealy recognised this problem, and conducted research in conjunction with leading orthopaedic surgeons. Together they discovered the concept of firmness and support being beneficial to sleep.
The Founding Fathers of Posturepedic
In the 1950s the ‘founding fathers of Posturepedic’ were Orthopaedic Surgeons Dr Robert G Addison and Dr Charles O Bechtol. Through years of dedicated research these Orthopaedic Surgeons developed a defined set of criteria’s that mattresses must include to be considered an orthopaedic correct sleep surface.
This research enabled Sealy engineers to fine-tune bedding technologies and mattress constructions to provide correct spinal alignment support, leading to the worlds first mattress approved by Orthopaedic Surgeons.
Named the “Orthopaedic- Firm- O- Rest” mattress, it was the forerunner to Sealy Posturepedic, this mattress paved the way for what would later build the legacy of Sealy Posturepedic.
Continual investing in Research and Development
To continue the work of Dr Addison and Dr Bechtol, Sealy Engineers developed test mannequin alongside Orthopaedic Surgeons in the 1960’s to assess mattresses. Over the years, these test mannequins have evolved to become more and more sophisticated and are still central to how we design mattresses to provide correct support and a wonderful night’s rest.
The OAB of today
The original ground- breaking work by the ‘founding fathers of Posturepedic’ all those years ago speared headed the vision for the Orthopaedic Advisory Board (OAB). To this day our unique relationship with the OAB continues to inform our product development.
Now in 2023, the OAB team is made up of world leading Scientists, Biomechanics and Engineers, continuing the important spinal health research inspired by the Orthopaedic Surgeons before them.
